   Joseph3 MERRILL (Abel2) - was born 12 July, 1681, in Newbury, Mass., and died 20 Sept. 1747, in Stratham, N.H., where the later years of his life were passed. He was known in Stratham as Ensign Joseph Merrill, to distinguish him from Joseph4 Merrill, "shoemaker," (Daniel3,2). (See 82, p. 253) Joseph3 Merrill married (1) 16 Feb. 1707, in Newbury, Ann Wiggins of Haverhill, who died 28 Dec. 1741, in Stratham, and (2) Sarah               . Children, born in Newbury:

  
i.   Ann4, b. 7 Nov. 1708; m. Thomas. Her
       father mentioned in his will grandsons
   Twiss Thomas and Joseph-Merrill Thomas.
  
  (117)   ii. Joseph4, b. 15 July, 1710; prob. d. 12 Jan. 1741/2;
    lived Stratham.
 
   118 iii. Enoch4, b. 17 Jan. 1711/12; d. 10 Jan. 1787.
 
  iv. Susanna4, b. 1 Sept. 1715; (m. 10 Sept. 1731, John
       Collins?); not mentioned in her father's will.
 
  (119) v. Elias4, b. 13 Nov. 1717; prob. d. 2 Oct. 1763;
       lived Stratham. Joseph3 mentioned in his
   will a grandson Elias and granddaughter
   Lydia. They were children of either Elias4
   or Joseph4.
