   JOHN3 MERRILL (Nathaniel2) was born 16 Feb. 1662/3, in Newbury, Mass., and died 15 May, 1705. He was a house carpenter. About 1697 he removed from Newbury to Bradford, Mass., and about 1700 to the West Parish of Haverhill, Mass. He left an estate valued at £152,7s., but his debts amounted to £158,12s. He married Lucy Webster, daughter of John and Ann (Batt) Webster. She was born 15 Dec. 1664, in Newbury, and was living in Haverhill in 1718. (William M. Sargent appears to be in error in the Maine Historical and Genealogical Recorder [vol. III., p. 179] in saying that John3 Merrill married as a second wife "Mary ." Administration on the estate of John Merrill was granted to "Lucy Merrill," his widow, 9 July, 1705.) Children, the first five of whom were born in Newbury:

  iv. Abigail4; m. 23 Mar. 1715, in Haverhill, Joseph
       Eastman of Salisbury, Mass., son of Capt. John
   and Mary (Boynton) Eastman; he was born 23
   June, 1692; lived in Salisbury. Children:
      Samuel, b. 21 Nov. 1715.                      (Eastman)
      Thomas, b. 8 May, 1717; d. young.
      Jonathan, b. 23 Nov. 1718.
      Joseph, b. 20 May, 1720.
      Abigail, b. 16 Mar. 1722/3.
      Enoch, b. 1 June, 1725.
      Stephen, b. 15 Mar. 1726/7.
      Mary, b. 2 Apr. 1728.
 
  33 v. John4, b. 3 Apr. 1696; d. 1773.

Stephen4, b. 11 Sept. 1700; d. 28 Apr. 1746.

     
  35 vii. Enoch4, b. 23 Jan. 1701/2; lived in Stratham, N.H. (?)
       and probably had a family.
     
  36 viii. Nathan4, b. 15 Apr. 1704.
     
  ix. Hannah4, b. in Haverhill, where she d. 9 June, 1745;
       m. 4 Jan. 1715/16, Samuel Hutchins, son of Joseph
   and Joanna (Corliss) Hutchins of Haverhill;
   he was b. 22 Aug. 1682; lived in Haverhill.
   Children:                                               (Hutchins)
      Samuel, b. 17 Sept. 1716; m. Mary Richardson;
         lived in Haverhill.
      Hannah, b. 1 Mar. 1717/18.
      Nathan, b. Apr. 1722.
      Abigail, b. 1 June, 1724.

   The Newbuy tax list of 1688 shows that John3 Merrill owned one house, five acres of plowable land, three acres of meadow, one horse, one yoke of oxen, one cow and eight sheep - New Eng. Hist. Gen. Register, April, 1878. pp. 156-164.
