Question: Cathy Paris wrote:

I am the great-granddaughter of GILBERT SAMUEL12 MERRILL (SAMUEL11, EDMOND10, EDMOND9, DANIEL8, DANIEL7, NATHANIEL6, NATHANIEL5, JOHN4 MERRELL, THE YOUNGER, JOHN3 MERYELL, JOHN2, THOMAS1) , aka Samuel Gilbert Merrill, born in Cumberland, Maine in 1846. I have been trying to sort out the Merrills of Cumberland and vicinity. What is the pedigree of the Israel Merrill whose intention to marry Martha Huff was recorded in North Yarmouth on 1 March 1806. Also Israel and Martha had 9 children whose births of were recorded in North Yarmouth: Fanny Winslow, Sarah Jane, Justin Worthley, Thomas Worthly, Susanna Lewis, John Hayes, Martha, Elizabeth Bailey, and Israel.

Answer: Cathy:

Good to hear from you again. Israel (6), b. ca 1782, who m. Martha Huff, his lineage is Nicholas (5), Israel (4), James (3), Abel (2), immigrant Nathaniel (1). We don't have a d. date for Israel. We found Isreael in North Yarmouth in 1810 and 1820, but not there in 1830. There was an unidentified Israel in Portland in 1830, but from the ages and mix of the children, we don't think it was this Israel.

Answer: Debra:

Your lineage is John Irwin (11), John Calvin (10), Nathan Hull (9), Addision W (8), Levi W (7), Benjamin (6,5), Samuel (4), Moses (3), Daniel (2), immigrant Nathaniel (1). More details are available. Levi Waldo (7) was the last one b. in ME [Greene]. Addison W (8) was b. in MA, but his wife, Nancy Morrill was b. in Hartland ME.

We are Howard and Jean Merrill. For over twenty five years we have been trying to database the Merrill/Merrell family nationwide from the original immigrants down to the present day for all immigrant lines. So far we have info on over 60,000 Merrill males plus their wives and daughters in our database, but we estimate there have been well over a100,000 so we have a long way to go, and need and appreciate all the help we can get, particularly with the later generations. We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that no info on living individuals will become internet accessible from us.

While our database is not internet searchable, we will be glad to search it for anybody and share what we find at no cost. All we ask is that folks share their Merrill data with us so that we can expand our database and do a better job of helping solve Merrill lineage problems.

We have your father's birth, but nothing about his family, children, and grandchildren, if any. We would appreciate any info you can give us.

Subject: Re: Merrill family - Abbie S Moulton, wife of Myron M Merrill

Question: Jack D Merrill wrote:

Dear Howard and Jean,

I am at an dead end (pardon the pun)trying to find information about Abbie S Moulton who was married to Myron Merrill until his death. They were the parents of my grandmother Kate Lillian. Did the information you previously gave me list who Abbie's parents were? If n! ot would it be possible to request a marriage certificate dating back to their marriage in 1870 from vital statistics that would list them? This is probably a mystery that won't be solved but I am determined to give it a go. Thanks again

Best regards, Kathy Bottomley

Answer: Kathy:

The NH vital records did not give the wife's parents name, or if it did, at that time we did not copy it down. However, we just went out on Ancestry.com and looked for Abbie Moulton, age ca 12, in the 1860 NH census. There she was, in Laconia, where she m. Myron ten years later. She was 12, with her parents, Henry Moulton, 50, Day Laborer, and wife Catherine, 28. A notation under Remarks indicates that Henry was deaf and dumb. Other children in the family were Clara A, 9; Frank L, 6; Eva C, 4; and Ida M, 1.

Going back to the 1850 census, we found Henry, Catherine, 20, and Abigail S, 1, in Meridith, the next town north of Laconia on Lake Winnipesaukie. There is some question about Hery's age. in 1850 he is listed as 49, but in 1860 he is listed as 50. Next door to Henry and Catherine are what we would assume to be his father, Isiah Moulton, 71, and wife, probably 2nd wife, Lydia Moulton, 48. Lydia is certainly not Henry's mother. No indication of 'deaf and dumb' for Henry in 1850.

In 1870 Henry, now 69, and Catherine, 32??, are still in Laconia, with a William, 12? [where was he in 1860? - maybe he is only 10 and was "in the basket"] and Nellie, 5. It looks like Henry's age in 1850 and 70 are correct and he was "fudging" in 1850, like Catherine is in 1870. In 1870, one of the questions was if they could read and write. Apparently Henry could do both, so we question the 'deaf and dumb' remark in 1860.

Hope this helps,

Howard and Jean
