Question: Bill Shull wrote:

I am descended from Hannah Merrill who married Stephen Swett in 1647 in Newbury. I believe that Hannah was the daughter of John Merrill but cannot identify who her mother was. One sources refers to Annis Bishop. Another refers to Elizabeth ____. Can you help?? Thanks!!!,

Answer: Bill:

It turns out that Immigrant John (1) Merrill m. twice.  He m. 1st, 1628/29 Jan 24, Anis Bishope. He m. 2nd, 1633 July 15, Elizabeth Vincent. John was listed as a widower at his m. to Elizabeth.  We do not know for sure which was the mother of Hannah, since we do not have Hannah's b. date.  In her 1680 will Elizabeth gives all her property to her grandchild Elizabeth Swett and her son-in-law Stephen Swett, which would suggest that Hannah was her child. But Hannah m. Stephen Swett, 1647 May 24.  If this m. date and Elizabeth's m. date are correct, Hannah would be only a maximum of 13 years 1 month old at her m., assuming a nine month gestation period for Hannah.
This seems quite young, but not impossible. This very young age would suggest that Hannah was Anis's child but was raised from infancy by Elizabeth.  If she was Anis's child she would be about 17 at her m. to Stephen, who was 27.

Sorry we could not be more definitive,

Question: Katie Leckey wrote:

I'm part of the Yarmouth/Cousins Island Maine Merrill's My grandmother was Helen Francis Hamilton daughter of Edwin Hamilton and Lucy Merrill who was the daughter of Helen Marr Drinkwater and Joseph Greenwood Merrill; son of Lucy H. Doyle and Joseph Green Merrill son of Silas Merrill, b! 1781 and Sarah Green. We are trying to find more information on Silas' second family and his life in Paris, Maine, as well as locate any other family looking for this line.

Answer: Katie:

While we know a lot about Silas, we do not know who his parents were. We have his b. date as 1784 Oct 4 in Freeport. He is reported to have a half brother named William.

Silas m. 3 times. He m. 1st 1807 Oct 9 Sarah Green [1785 Oct 8 -1809 Sep 18]. They had Joseph Green, 1809 May 26, who after his mother's d. was raised by his maternal grandparents, Joseph Green and Hannah (Hannaford) Green.

Silas m. 2nd, 1811 Jun 29, Elizabeth Loring [1784 Nov 18 - 1823 May 27]. They had Sarah Ames, 1812 Aug 10; Elizabeth, 1817 Aug 15; John Edes, 1819 Mar 2; Edward Davis, 1821 Oct 5 - 1827 Jan 21; and Susan Jane, 1822 Jun 26.

Silas m. 3rd, 1824 Jan 5, Sarah (Carsley) Buck [ca 1794 - 1866 Nov 10]. They had Arvilla Record, 1824 Jun 25; Abigail, 1826 Aug 27 - 1829 Jan 24; Freeman Carsley, 1828 Mar 15; Daniel Carsley, 1830 Jun 7; and Louisa B, 1832 Dec 14.

Silas was in Guilford, Penobscot, ME in the 1820 census, in Abbott, Somerset, ME in 1830, in Poland, Androscoggin, ME in 1840 and 50, He d. 1857 Jun 8 in Paris, Oxford, ME.

If we were to speculate as to who his parents might be, we would say the most likely candidate would be Moses (5) [1737 Jun 9 - ca 1788] and his 2nd wife, Susanna Grant. In the 1790 census Susanna was the 'Head of Household' in Freeport with two sons, one under 16 and one over 16 and three daughters. Moses did have a son William, probably by his 1st wife, Pheobe Coffin, but we don't have a good date for William. If William was indeed Phoebe's child, he is probably the 16+ son in 1790, and would also fit the half brother designation that Silas is reported to have. Silas would fit the under 16 son in the 1790 census, but we have no record to indicate that Silas was Moses's son. We do have a m. intention 1769 Nov 25 for Moses and Susanna Grant of N. Yarmouth.

We hope this helps,

Question: Reggie Merrill wrote:

I am looking for the parents of John Henry Merrill, b. Oct. 24,1823 in Fayette Co. Pa. and died in McDonough Co. Ill.

Answer: Reggie:

We do not think we have any info on your John Henry Merrill. There are no Merrills listed in Fayette Co PA in the 1830 census. In 1820, however, there are two, William [Jackson] and Abraham, both the sons of Abijah [probably b. NJ], who was in Fayette Co. by 1800. We have no information on Abraham other than that 1820 census listing where he had two sons under 10. William Jackson moved to Mill Creek, Coshocton, OH before 1830 and he d. there1834 Sep. It is interesting that he had a son, Henry Melville ca1822. Do you think this might be your John Henry? What can you tell us of John Henry and his movements from Fayette Co PA to McDonough Co IL? Who did he m. and where? When did he d.? Who were his kids and where and when were they b.?

Let us introduce our selves. We are Howard and Jean Merrill. For twenty five years we have been trying to database the Merrill/Merrell family nationwide from the original immigrants down to the present day for all immigrant lines. So far we have info on over 60,000 Merrill males plus their wives and daughters in our database, but we estimate there have been well over a100,000 so we have a long way to go, and need and appreciate all the help we can get, particularly with the later generations. We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that no info on living individuals will become internet accessible from us. We would be very interested in how you descend from John Henry.

While our database is not internet searchable, we will be glad to search it for anybody and share what we find at no cost. All we ask is that folks share their Merrill data with us so that we can expand our database and do a better job of helping solve Merrill lineage problems.

Question: Robert Merrill wrote:

I was reading some questions that were asked. One was on a Henry E. Merrill. In my files I show him as a son to Edwin H. Merrill. In 1861,Edwin and Henry established Akron Pottery at South Main and State Streets in Akron ,Ohio.Prior to this Edwin,in 1833,bought out Fisk and Smith pottery in S! ummit County,Ohio.Edwin Had learnd the trade from his Father Abijah Merrill.

Answer: Robert:

The Henry E Merrill, b. 1839 July 1 in OH to Edwin Hubbard (7) Merrill, to which you refer, is only one of TEN Henry E's in our files that we know the lineage of. Then there are at least SIX more Henry E's whose lineage we don't know. We think the query you are refering to is the the one dated Oct 13 2006, asking about Henry E, b. Jefferson ME in Sep 1826 [one of the six]. These are obviously two different Henry E Merrills. Dates and locations are extremely important in determining the validity of a relationship.
