Question: David Merrill wrote:

Your recent response to my query about Marriner Wood Merrill's ancesrty contained a family group record for Nathaniel Merrill and Sarah Hazen. I have been interested in verifying my other Merrill ancestry and wondered if you would share family group records on the following families if you have them. They are all father to son direct line. Nathaniel Merrill (1601) & Susannah Wolerton John Merrill (1635/36) & Sarah Watson Abel Merrill (1680) & Mehitable Easton Thomas Merrill (1715) & Martha Wood Titus Merrill (1756) & Annin Belden Valentine Merrill (1783) & Lydia Sisson Valentine is my 3rd great grandfather on my father's side of the family. Thank you David Merrill

Answer: David:

We would be glad to share with you the details of your Merrill line from immigrant Nathaniel down to Valentine (6) if you will share with us your info on the Merrill surname descendants of Valentine in your line down to the present day. We have several generations of Valentine's descendants, but we don't know through which line you descend.

We are trying to database the Merrill/Merrell surname nationwide from the original immigrants right down to the present day for all the immigrant lines. So far we have over 60,000 Merrill males, plus their wives and daughters in our database, but we estimate that there are well over 100,000 so we have a long way to go, and we need and appreciate all the help we can get, particularly with the later generations. We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that no info on living individuals will become internet accessible.

We can send the data from Nathaniel to Valentine as family group sheets for each generation, similar to what we sent for Nathaniel and Sarah Hazen, or we can send a Genealogy Report for the entire line down to Valentine or as far down your line as we have the data after we know what your line is.  Which ever you prefer.

Out of curiosity, if you are descended from Nathaniel through Valentine, what is your connection with Marriner Wood?  Are you, or your wife also descended from him? Or are you, like us, challenged by trying to solve a hitherto unsolved problem?

Question: Kimberley Sue Merrill-Varelmann wrote:

Do you know of any Merrill's of Pennsylvania-dutch roots. My grandfather Joe Delmas Merrill was thought to be of this area. He resided in Hamilton, OH when he married my Grandmother Agnes Elliott-Merrill. I think he was born in 1906?. I am going to see if I can locate a family Bible for more info. I was just very surprised to see that the Merrill's were from England when I was under the assumption they were German! (I think my Great Grandfathers name was John Merrill of Hamilton, OH-near Cincinnati) Thank You, Kimberley

Answer: Kimberly:

Sorry to burst your bubble about your possible PA dutch roots.  While most of the Merrills in the US today are descended from Nathaniel who came into Newbury MA in 1639 [b. 1601 in Wherstead, Suffolk, England], your immigrant ancestor, William, came as an indentured servant to the eastern shore of MD in 1668 [we presume from England, but don't know exactly where].

We found your Joe D as a 3 year old in the 1910 census in Morgan, Butler, OH with his parents John and Willie:  John N/W, 32, b. KY, parents b. KY, m. 12 years; Willie M, 32, b. KY, par. b. KY, 5 children, 3 living; John W, 8, b. KY; George H, 6, b. OH; Joe D, 3, b. OH.  We also found his parents in 1900 in Richland, Harrison KY:  John W, 21, b. Nov 1878, KY, par KY; m. 3 yr; Willie, 22, b. May 1878, 1 ch, 1 liv, Othello, 1, b. July 1898.  Othello must be one of the two children she lost before 1910.  We haven't been able to locate the family in 1920, but they should be in Butler Co since all three children d. there.

From the Social Security Death Index, we found that your Joe Delmas [are you sure it isn't Delmar?] was b. 1907 Sep 27 and d. 1973 July _ Hamilton OH, SS# 275-10-5660.   We also
found your grandmother, Agnes M Merrill, 1913 Jan 26 - 2001 Feb 28, SS# 302-16-6406.  Since she d. so recently, we hope you gathered a lot of info and stories from her.

From other information we have that Joe D's father was John Nelson (7), b. in Falmouth Pendelton, KY to John Samuel (6) and Margaret [possibly Nelson?] and his wife was Willie Hall.
Joe D (8)'s lineage is John N (7), John S (6), Levin P (5), Samuel (4), William (3), Joshua (2), immigrant William (1). More Details are available.

Question: Delores (_?_) wrote:

Is there a Merrill family crest? and if so where might I find it? Delores from south Dakota

Answer: Delores:

On the web site where you posted this query, <merrill.org>, you will find under the "Merrill family" link a link entitled "heraldry". This gives a chapter  from the book A MERRILL MEMORIAL entitled "a few questions of heraldry". This chapter is well worth reading and discusses the various crests that may have been used by folks with the Merrill name. Whether the use of any of these coats of arms were ever "authorized" is open to question, but any Merrill may use them if they so desire.
