Friends of Duck River
On Saturday November 23, 1996, a meeting was held at Holly Pond City Park along with a
Mini-Picnic.
In attendance was approximately 12-14 charter members along with their children and a
few guests and a reporter from The Cullman Tribune, Allen Mainard.
Copies of Eminent Domain was distributed to each member along with some discussion on
the Tribune article printed on October 31, 1996.
Following are some of the subjects under consideration:
- Setting aside some of the area for recreational purposes: i.e. walking paths,
picnic purposes, boat ramps, bird & animal areas, wildflower gardens and other
approved purposes.
- "Surplus land" to be put in a reserve account to be sold to "former"
property owners.
- Consolidation of Cullman County Water Systems:
- a. uniformity in water rates
- b. uniformity in service
- c. upgrade the system (i.e. larger water pipes, more fire hydrants, etc.)
- Lower insurance premiums, elected officials on water boards.
- Selection and recommendation for an attorney for our organization. The members have the
option of their own attorney for personal purposes.
- More Cullman County control over the administration of the Project and water
distribution and ownership.
- A separate water filtering and distribution plant. Note: If we have two major water
supplies (lakes), then maybe we should have two plants.
